Baileys white hot chocolate is the ultimate grown up hot chocolate! Rich, creamy white hot chocolate with a delicious Baileys twist, this is pure indulgence!

Having a bit of a sweet tooth myself, I’m rather impartial to a good hot chocolate. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s milk, dark or white, any chocolate is welcome in my mug! If I had to choose though, white chocolate would always win out! There’s something almost over the top in the indulgence of white chocolate that just makes it feel so much more like a real treat!

And Baileys. You can’t go wrong with anything containing Baileys, in my opinion. Tastes like a beautiful alcoholic milkshake, rich and decadent. What’s not to love?!

The history of hot chocolate

Hot chocolate actually dates as far back as 500BC to the Mayan civilization in central America. They would make a drink from ground up cocoa, ground cornmeal, water and chillies, amongst other ingredients. A very different version of what we enjoy today!

Chocolate was brought to Europe by the Spaniards in the 1500s, and was a fiercely protected drink they were really proud of. It was here it began to be served as a hot sweetened drink without the chillies, more like the version we enjoy today. Eventually, after around a hundred years, it spread around Europe, finding it’s way to England. Here, despite it being an expensive indulgence, it gained huge popularity resulting in the opening of several chocolate houses (similar to cafes today).

When, in the late 1700s, people began mixing it with milk instead of water, it’s popularity grew further still. Interestingly, until the 19th century, hot chocolate was consumed not just as a very expensive drink (it could cost up to £65 in today’s money!), but also medicinally. It was used to treat a variety of ailments from fever to liver disease, chest ailments and stomach disorders. The French even used it “to fight against fits of anger and bad moods”! Frankly, I feel most of us could testify that the French nailed it! After all, hot chocolate makes everything better, right?! 😘

Making this couldn’t be easier

Much like my Biscoff white hot chocolate, this Baileys white hot chocolate is so simple to make. Just heat up your milk, add in your chopped chocolate and stir to melt, then tip in the Baileys, stir again and serve. For extra gratification, I like to top my drink with some softly whipped double cream and chocolate shavings too.

This drink is totally divine, perfect for curling up on the sofa with.
